Love Never Quits

Saint Valentine died for his faith in Lord Jesus Christ. Love compels.

Love never quits.

1 Corinthians 13:4–8a (New International Version) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. (NIV)

These beautiful verses the Lord Jesus Christ had the Apostle Paul write are often shared at weddings.  Christian truth shared as poetry.

But, this love isn’t eros romantic love.   It isn’t philos, brotherly love, or family (familias?) love.  It is about charity – or agape love.  Selfless love.

Agape love is the love the Lord Jesus Christ, Father God, and Holy Spirit hold for us.  It’s the love we’re supposed to share with all other humans.

And, the agape love is given as Grace.   The undeserved, unearned love.

Give love selflessly to those who don’t deserve it.  And NEVER QUIT doing it.

The one, only, true, living triune God never quit on you.  He sent part of Himself to suffer more than you ever have, will or could and die for you.

So, this Valentine’s Day 2012, don’t quit on eros – if it is right and righteous with your married spouse or  betrothed, intended to be.  Don’t quit on philos – a friend is closer than a brother.  Don’t quit on familias – the father of the prodigal son didn’t.

Live my favorite word in the Bible – lovingkindness.  Lovingkindness.

Love never quits.   Lovingkindness lives, gives, is.  Live it to be it.

Happy Valentine’s Day 2012.
