Thanking the Right God at Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day 2010.

President Barack Hussein Obama’s proclamation points out that the first Yankee Thanksgiving (following the first one in English-speaking America – in Virginia, of course) included “the Wampanoag tribe — who had been living and thriving around Plymouth, Massachusetts for thousands of years.”  He neglects to mention how primitive their thriving was.  Pretends that they taught the English how to farm and survive.   Among the neo-lithic people of the world, Amer-Indians were stuck on pretty primitive.   Why were they so far behind the Europeans?   Our Declaration of Independence refers to Indians as ‘Savages’.

Obama focuses on the “compassion and contributions of Native Americans, whose skill in agriculture helped the early colonists survive, and whose rich culture continues to add to our Nation’s heritage.”  The next year the English and the Indians were at war.  Was that part of the Indian compassion?  And, what part of Indian culture shapes American culture today?  Not their paganism.  So, what is it?

Obama mentions Washington and Lincoln’s proclamations.   Then, he actually says, “we lift up our hearts in gratitude to God for our many blessings, for one another, and for our Nation.”  And, “As Americans gather for the time-honored Thanksgiving Day meal, let us rejoice in the abundance that graces our tables, in the simple gifts that mark our days, in the loved ones who enrich our lives, and in the gifts of a gracious God.  Let us recall that our forebears met their challenges with hope and an unfailing spirit, and let us resolve to do the same.”

Finally, “IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-third day of November, in the year of our Lord two thousand ten, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fifth.

Is the God in one paragraph the same as the Lord in the closing?  It was for George Washington.

President George Washington wasn’t talking about a harvest festival but a “ DAY OF PUBLICK THANSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness”

Washington continues “NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;– for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish Constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;– for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;– and, in general, for all the great and various favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us.”

Finally this God-centered focus finishes, “And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;– to enable us all, whether in publick or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.”

And signed using the same calendar based on Lord Jesus “GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.

G. Washington”

Nice to see Obama’s couple of references to God.  I wonder which God Obama means?

Washington meant the one, only, true, living God of the Jews and Christians.  And, Washington bowed his head to God as He manifested Himself in the Lord Jesus Christ – the one we base our calendar on.

Not Allah. Buddha. Rama or friends.  Or, any Great Spirit or lesser ones worshipped by pagans.

Thanksgiving in America is about giving Thanks to the God of the Jews and Christians.  Americans have the freedom to ignore this or give thanks to any other god.  Like the Liberal Human Secularists, who worship the small god of “Self.”  It isn’t about thanking the Indians.  The Virginians and Pilgrims didn’t bow their heads in a diversity prayer to the visiting shaman chanting to spirits.

We should bow our heads, as George Washington did, to the Lord God of the Holy Bible.
