America’s Army: 237 years old today

The Army created the Nation

America’s Army is 237 years old.  Recently, I  supported the Army’s “Unified Quest 2012″ future wargame at Carlisle Barracks, PA.  The wargame took place in 2020.    Press reports included the usual drivel that the Army was trying to find its rationale.  Or searched for  its place in the post-Iraq and Afghanistan world.  Or justify its existence since all the Defense professional wags are agog over Air-Sea Battle.   The chattering class gets that way.

The Army officers I worked with didn’t seem confused as to their role in 2020 and beyond.   They know the politicians are going to cut their funding, but that is it.   They don’t know how badly and for how long.   They don’t know what the cost, a very unnecessary price, will be paid in blood and treasure when the Army is too small or too ill supplied in a future conflict.   But, they know what the Army does.

The Army conducts ALL PROMPT AND SUSTAINED OPERATIONS ON LAND (from Title X of the US Code).

The Army is the master of Land Warfare.

The Army wins the Nation’s wars – decisively – when they are ordered to win.

The Army insures the survival of the Republic.  The politicians may destroy the Republic by shredding the Constitution, but the Army will make sure there is a Government of the United States (GOTUS) for another day – if the politicians care to correct their errors.

Furthermore, the politicians may destroy American military power by bankrupting the country or unfunding the Army.  Today, the Army is 73  Brigade Combat Teams on active duty (includes called up Reserve units) .   Barry Soetero is cutting the Army from 569k to 495k.  The politicians are cutting the most important part of the Army – experienced soldiers.  The politicians are cutting the most dangerous weapon system in Land Warfare – the Army soldier.

As enemies count down the number of Brigade Combat Teams there is a direct correlation as the US goes from being an Uber Super Power, to Super Power, to World Power, and down to Regional Power.  So, it goes.

The Army is being cut back to where it was before the Korean War in 1950.  The Marines won’t go back to their 1950 numbers because they are much, much better at politics.  The NRA, AARP and USMC are the political lobbies one does NOT challenge in Washington.

America’s Army will continue to serve as the National Servant.  As it has since The Army created the Nation in our Revolution.  The Army and the People will pay the price for political folly some day in the future.   In the meantime, the Army will do its best to prepare for future conflicts – for America’s Next First Battle.

The Army can do no less.  “This We’ll Defend.”

Duty, Honor, Country.

  1. Congratulations and happy birthday!
I am available to be a consultant to my Army brethren on how we Marines lobby.

  2. Thanks DV. I wish I had the money and the Army leadership had the awareness to listen to you.

    • I struggle in my day job with the Navy at Little Creek that as we deal with today’s issues they need to remember to organize structure for war and then jury rig it for peacetime not the other way around.

Did you see that SECDEF announced today that we will now spend a month dedicated to honoring homosexuals in the military?
      The World turned upside down.

  3. DV: Please look up Scott Cottrell at Little Creek. Great American.

When I was in Japan in 94 and marveled at the 3000 year old culture outside the gate of the airbase and the fact that an American airbase sat there, I figured it was our understanding and organization for war, not superior culture, that won WW II.

The folly of homosexual celebration provides an opportunity for soldiers and marines of all ranks to have profiles in courage. Not looking for trouble, but speaking truth to power. In Jan 13, I hope we turn this all about.

  4. Congrats!

The Marines may be better at the politics. I don’t know, but I suspect being smaller to start with helps.

Don’t forget we are talking about the Obama, Liberal Democrats, Spineless Republicans, and a still indifferent public. What does rational argument mean to any these people? Like as not Obama is deliberately trying to destroy the military. It is a cinch Liberal Democrats have little use for military personnel, not when over 60 percent of military personnel vote for the other guy.

The economy may be damaged and we may be fighting a small war in the MiddleEast, but most people remain untouched and apathetic. Shrug. Human nature is what it is. Sometimes we have to be hurt before we come to our senses.

    • Thanks, CT. The ratio of Army to Marines in combat since 1950 has been 5:1. It was much, much higher before 1950. Yet the ratio of personnel in peactime as gone from 5:1 (1950) down to 2 point something to 1. After the end of the Cold War, the cuts started by the Republicans and finished by the Democrats cut the Army over 40% and the Marines about 18% – if I remember correctly. It is politics.

  5. More than politics is the problem some Marines and politicians have in recognizing that we don’t need two armies. Which is what we have now. Marines should be complementary and not redundant. Hard to keep on track when so many are dependent on their rice bowls.

  6. DV: When I graduated from the USMC Staff College I got – in my mind – complementary and strategic/operational maneuver from the Sea. Which is why, had I been successful as a pol for 3 weeks in 2007, I would have worked on the House Armed Services committee to greatly increase amphib ships. Sea-based forces need sea bases. Properly supported by naval shipping the forced entry – from the sea – capabilities of the Marines make every enemy have a headache planning defense.

    • Too bad we aren’t in Congress. So much needs to be done.

      • I’d vote for you. Since you are not in 1CD, I’d help as I can.

Need about $250k to start a run?

      • Thanks. I’m probably too old.
But I’d be happy to help a constitutional patriot to win.
